Hello Conrad,

There were a few questions that came up while I was discussing the solar thermal and solar PV systems during the open house.  I thought I'd put them here for everyones reference.

1) Why are there two inverters for the PV system?

A: I asked Gordon Howell this question after the open house and this is what I understood to be the answer:  One inverter is for the fixed angle modules on the roof and the second inverter is for the modules that will be on the movable awning.  Most of the time, the angle to the sun for the modules on the roof will be different than the angle of the modules on the movable awning.  The different angle means that the modules will be at different points in the power/efficiency curve which will lead to the collectors fighting each other if they were connected to the same inverter.  Having two inverters ensures the maximum efficiency and output of all the collectors.

2) Is the backup electric water heater a tankless heater?  If it is a tank-style electric water heater, what size is it?

A:  My understanding from Philip was that it is a normal tank-style water heater.  Conrad, can you comfirm the size?

3) Is the homeowner monitoring how much power is being used by the electric water heater?

A: I didn't think so.  Conrad, can you comment on this?

Architect Thomas Doerr shows how passive solar design, super-insulation, photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal were used to create this southwestern style, net-zero energy house. The US Department of Energy's Energy Star program says a typical house scores 100 on its HERS (Home Energy Rating System). The lower a house scores, the better. The green building strategies used for the Moore House earned it a HERS score of -3; one of a few houses to ever score this well. I'm sure this example is worth following.
