Description: Parkallen is exploring the idea of Transition. It all starts off when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil and Climate Change?

A Transition Initiative is a community  working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question:

"for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?"
This results in a coordinated range of projects across all these areas of life that strives to rebuild the resilience we've lost as a result of cheap oil and reduce the community's carbon emissions drastically.

Transition Communities and projects recognize two crucial points

  • that we used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy upslope, and that there's no reason for us not to do the same on the downslope
  • if we collectively plan and act early enough there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find ourselves on today.
Come out to Parkallen League Hall and find out more about the jouney to Transition.

June 29: What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire.
“Elegant and almost poetic in tone, What a Way To Go gently takes us by the hand as it explains to us the harsh reality of how things really are, where they’re likely to go, and how difficult the challenge is.”

July 6: Escape from Suburbia
"Meet ordinary people making extraordinary choices as they tackle the key issues facing us today -- the rising cost and supply of energy, the roller-coaster economy, and the faded memories of the [North] American Dream."

July 13: Money as Debt I & II
"Two short animated documentary films about the monetary systems practiced through modern banking. Film 1 visually demonstrates the process of money creation by private corporations (banks).  Film 2 examines the crash of 2008 and resulting taxpayer bailouts.  Both fims superbly demystify the financial system."

July 20: In Transition 1.0
"Presents the Transition Town model of community organizing to address the triple threat of climate change, peak oil, and global financial instability."

All events are at the Parkallen Community Hall, 11104 65 AVE NW, Edmonton, at 7 pm.   Contact Robert Kirchner (kirchner@ualberta.ca, 780 438-2287) for more information.

Increasing numbers of Edmontonians don't want to work for 'the man'. They don't want to work a 9-5 job. They want to create some sort of lifestyle that not only sustains the planet - but can also sustain them.

    But how?

We know about the importance of sustainable eco-systems in nature. But we can forget about creating a sustainable eco-system in our own lives.

So, e-sage is super thrilled to be hosting Guelph's Alex Baisley of of http://www.BigDreamProgram.com/ as he makes his way through Edmonton.

We figure - the more sustainable good hearted people's lives are - the more good they can do for the planet. Who can think about making a difference when they're strung out about money, and having their soul sucked out by their lame job?

Alex Baisley has worked with people around the world to help them take their talents, interests, and passions, and put 'em all together into something beautiful.

    Says Alex . . .

"Maybe you have a job or business you really don't care for anymore. You feel there is more to life, that you'd like to work at something meaningful, maybe work for yourself, help others, have a better lifestyle, but you just can't figure out what you should be doing.

You know you are creative, independent, and would prefer to make your living doing your 'own thing' if you could just figure out what...

Have you questioned leaving your job, going back to school, going to a life coach...? All good ideas by the way, but before going through another day frustrated and questioning... maybe come hear me out.

Maybe you are a parent, and you love the idea of having your work fit better with your family - allowing you to spend more time with your kids for instance, maybe even have them be involved in your work somehow a better life / work balance...

Do you ever get that 'PANIC' of feeling time is ticking along, and you still haven't figured out what the heck you're supposed to be doing with your life? This can be a very unpleasant experience - I know first hand what it felt like, and I'm sure glad I don't feel it any more!

There is hope! There are 5 puzzle pieces to getting on track, fast.

In our evening, you will learn the 5 building blocks of the Calling Formula! I call them JRs - Juicy Realizations - and once you understand their importance in your life, I think you'll wonder how you ever left them out of your work direction decisions in the past!

Funny enough - only one of these JRs has to do with your work and income! You will learn how to start making work decisions that are not only more successful and meaningful, but will enhance the other aspects of the ecosystem of your life - and THEN you start to feel you're on the right track!

    Hope to see you there!
